Baby Talk was born in Kingston upon Thames during the peak of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Although information and support was provided virtually during the lockdown periods, it was difficult to meet other new parents and build friendships with limited face to face interaction.
We started out as a WhatsApp group across a few roads in KT2, and quickly grew into a network of new parents across Kingston and the local areas. From connecting parents on our online platforms, arranging meet ups, and working with local professionals to provide a range of pre and post natal sessions, our initiative continues to grow.
Kingston Baby Talk was born off the back of my search for local mum friends and things to do when my daughter was a few months old. I was new to motherhood, the local area, and life in and out of lockdown, and wanted to meet other new parents to share my journey with.
Starting a family has emphasised the obstacles that new parents face, and highlighted just how much more support is needed during the transition into parenthood - whether this is preparation before babys' arrival, getting advice during those first few months, finding a local network or adjusting to changes following a period of maternity/paternity leave.
